Completed On Time & To Budget

Hygienic & Environmental Engineering, as main contractor, designed, installed and commissioned one of the largest cooling water loops at a premier Biotech site in the UK.

The 800 metre, flow and return loop, consisted of a combination of 2.5,3,4,6,8 & 10 inch 316L Stainless Steel pipework taken over a light weight flat roof to avoid plant room congestion.

The system was commissioned to optimize & reduce WFI sub loop cooling times in order to support the ambitious site expansion plans.

Cooling water distribution upgrade

The biotech production facility utilizes cooling water to support utilities, production and 8 freeze dryers from 4 cooling towers.

There are a couple of sub loops that support

  1. Process & HVAC chillers
  2. Process areas

The main users within the production area are WFI coolers which provide WFI at temperatures varying between +5°C and +35°C by cooling the circulating WFI from +85°C.

Cooled WFI is typically used to make buffer solutions and in final product formulation and availability at the right time and temperature is critical to reliable, on time processing.

The cooling water project is critical to the success of the new WFI systems that will be coming on stream mid 2009.
